My Real Estate Portfolio

Real Estate is the largest group of asset in my portfolio. I have owned and sold multiple properties in US and Malaysia, and I truly believe Real Estate are the best wealth builder over time.

My advice is to invest in Real Estate as early as in your 20s as buying a house or an apartment can pay off big time if you invest wisely early on. Owning a house instead of renting is often a good way to save money and set yourself up with a valuable asset in the future. On top of that, the ability to rent out the property can also provide a source of income that can pay off your mortgage while also earning you some extra money on top.

I realize there are others that does not believe in this approach, and prefer the rental approach to not be tied to the property long-term, saving on repairs, taxes and insurance, and keeping up with other expenses.  Not to mention maintaining flexibility and certain lifestyle. I also agree there is a significant level of commitment, both financial and physical to owning a home. However, just like buying a stock, you just have to understand why you are buying the property, the location and potential growth potential. In my case, finding a good location with traditional strong growth trend, good public schools, easy access and proximity to jobs are the fundamentals I look for in most of my properties, which have worked out well for me and provided considerable value beyond just financial.

Below are some of my personal Real Estate stories

The Ranch house

San Jose, California

How I invested my USD$17,000 savings in my first property in US, and ended up with this multi million dollar home in Silicon Valley.

Emerald Residence

Johor, Malaysia

My current residence in Malaysia. Purchased and moved in early 2020. One of the main attractiveness of this property is it’s location, which is only 30mins away from Singapore.

Lakehome, Iskandar Puteri

Johor, Malaysia

Investment property in Malaysia, due for completion in 2023.

Pengkalan house

Ipoh, Malaysia

Purchased in 2006. This is where I grew up

Upcoming Project

San Jose, CA

This project invoves adding a 640sqf Detached “Granny” unit at The Ranch property. The cost will be USD235k, but we expect this to add about USD450k to the value of the house.
Project to begin Mar 2022.

Happy Valley Hse (Marc)

Oregon

Our eldest son had moved to Portland in 2019 for his job, and proceeded to purchase his first house late 2020. It was a major commitment for someone his age and especially at the height of the pandemic. However, since he moved in early 2021, this property has appreciated more than 20% due to the hot property market in Portland.
